Skatemare Recap!

The Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls played their final bout of the 2008
season Saturday night, an intraleague rematch between home teams the
Slaughter Scouts and the Farm Fatales, with the Scouts coming out on
top, 136-88.

In the season opener in May, the Farm girls beat the Scouts by 1 point
in the last seconds of the last jam of the game. Needless to say, the
Scouts were ready to exact revenge, though they skated with only 11
skaters on their roster. Meanwhile, the Fatales, with a full bench of
14, were determined to prove their dominance within the league.

The bout got off to a fast, hard-hitting start. You could not tell
this was the season-ending game and that both teams were battered and
battling injuries. The pack pace was quick and both teams seemed to
score at will. Both teams also spent a fair amount of time in the
penalty box, early on but especially in the 2nd period. Ultimately,
though, the Fatales were no match for the stamina and teamwork of the
tight-knit Slaughter Scouts.

High scorers of the evening for the Scouts were Kaka Caliente (51
pts.) and Felanie Charges (47 pts.). Fatales jammers included Bad
Mudda Trucka (34 pts); Unicoroner (24 pts); and Knock’r Down (5 pts.),
normally a juggernaut of a bench coach, who jammed in the final jam of
the game and brought the crowd to its feet with an amazing, literally
unstoppable grand slam.

The Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls congratulates the Slaughter Scouts
on their victory, and sends mad derby love to the Farm Fatales for
playing their bleeding hearts out with style and grit. This second
season firmly established BHRG as a force to be reckoned with in our
region, and the league hopes to capitalize on this success by
recruiting even more skaters during the off-season.

Two Skills Camps for potential recruits will be held:
Saturday, Oct 25 from 10am-noon
Saturday, Nov 15 from 10am-noon

Tryouts will be held Saturday, Dec 6 from 10am-noon.
All three events will be held at Western Skateland, 930 W 17th St.,
Bloomington, Ind.

Strivers must be 19 years of age or older. Pads and gear will be
provided, and you may rent skates at the rink if you don’t already
have your own.
(Prospective refs are encouraged to come out too!)

BHRG finishes the 2008 season with a combined record (all 3 teams,
home and away) of 7-4. We want to thank our legions of volunteers who
have helped to make roller derby a thriving new sport in southern
Indiana. We also thank the amazing crowds and sponsors that have
cheered us on at home all season. See you all in 2009!
