Want to be a rollergirl?

skating aheadYou’ve been asking for it and now it’s time! Want to learn what it takes to be a Bleeding Heartland Rollergirl? Want to learn how to skate and what roller derby is all about? Come join a few of our girls at Western Skateland on Wednesday nights starting August 12th.

The rink session is from 6:30-8:30pm. Admission to Western Skateland is $4 if you have skates and $5 if you need rental skates. A tough and lovely BHRG Rollergirl will be available to answer all of your questions about the rest. Soon we will have available “Fresh Meat Packets” that will tell you all you need to know about BHRG, how to become a rollergirl, and information on the addition of a training department where you can learn all about derby before you make a commitment. Some nominal fees and expenses will apply once “Meat Locker” practices begin. In the meantime join us at Western Skateland on Wednesdays in August to find out more and have a roll around the rink with some rollergirls!

In addition, there will be a skills camp on Saturday, August 29th from 10:00a.m.-noon at Western Skateland. During skills camp you can learn more about all of the skating skills required to be a bouting rollergirl. Try outs will take place later this Fall so the time is now to start training!

Western Skateland is located at 930 W 17th St in Bloomington, Indiana [map]

  1. I would like to come check you out. I would also like to know if you have minirollergirls (younger girls)? At what age can one become a roller girl? Are you interested in mentoring and training up the new generation of roller girls?

  2. Hey Roller Wanna be- at this time there is no “junior” league in Bloomington. To Join BHRG you need to be 19. Due to the amount of time required to spend mentoring or training a junior team it really is not something that is feasable at this time. There are a great deal of legal issues to consider when working with minors that can get complicated with insurance concerns, and parental permission and we just don’t have the woman power at this time to take that on. Hopefully one day we can take it to the next level and offer something like that to up and comers but at this time we are a pretty new league our selves (only in our third season) so our focus is pretty much taken up at this time. There are roller girls often at the skating rink and we are all really pretty nice so feel free to start a chat up with one and I’m sure they would be happy to demonstrate some of the very basic skills that are needed for derby without any special needs (like pads, helmet, mouth gard). It’s all we have at this time. thanks for the post Hope that helped at least a bit. Knock’r Down
