About BHRG

Roller derby is alive in south central Indiana, and it’s NOT your parents’ roller derby!

Gone are the golden days of the 1940s and ’50s, when roller derby was more like a grueling test of endurance than a sport. Gone are the cheesy pro-wrestling-style derby bouts of the ’60s and ’70s, when the MANY fights were staged, scoring seemed like an afterthought, and oh my, that huge hair!

Today’s roller derby is a rough, tough, athletic competition, but with enough trash-talkin’ attitude, wipeouts and injuries, and short skirts and fishnets to keep audiences of all ages on the edge of their seats. From a mere three teams in 2004, roller derby has exploded to include dozens of leagues — many with multiple teams — across the country. Wherever you find hard women who want to skate fast and beat other teams, you’ll find a roller derby league.

RollerskatesEnter the Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls (BHRG) roller derby league, co-founded in Bloomington, Indiana, by Molly McFracture and Truly F Obvious in August 2006. After a hard year of heavy recruiting and organizing, BHRG’s membership has grown, their vision for the league is solid, and the skills of the league’s first team, the Flatliners, are sharp and ready for scrimmages and bouts with teams as far away as Fort Wayne, Ind.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Covington, Ky.; and Nashville, Tenn.

BHRG skates and practices constantly, and is always on the lookout for new league members, both to compete on the team and as support crew at bouts. Truly F Obvious says, “You can usually find a Bleeding Heartland Rollergirl doing laps at Western Skateland (930 W. 17th St., Bloomington, Ind.) at the Friday night sessions.”

The league practices at Eagles Landing in Ellettsville, Ind., and the girls are planning to produce their local bouts at the Bloomington SportsPlex, Indiana’s premier indoor sports facility.

But derby is like any other sport: You wouldn’t believe the number of people it takes to put on a successful competition. From ticket takers and concessions, to security and scorekeepers, to refs, EMTs, and sound engineers — it’s an enormous undertaking. Men and women, young or old — if you are interested in lending your time and talents to our organization, the Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls want YOU!

These ladies have faced numerous personal obstacles, rebounded from injuries, and are ready to travel near and far to knock another team around as the crowd cheers them on.

Sponsor them!
Join the team!
Volunteer to help at local bouts!
But most important:
Come see them play!

Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls hope to be proud members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) by the end of their 2008 season.

Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls invite ANY visting members of other teams to join us for practice: We’ll show you ours if you show us yours!
