After an amazing weekend of watching North Central Regionals, the Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls are excited to hit the track once more! While still in our off-season around Bloomington, BHRG’s charter team, the Flatliners, has had the pleasure of being invited to bout against Windy Citys’ B-team, Second Wind, at the UIC Pavilion on Saturday, October 22nd! This will be part of a double-header bout, with North Central ‘s #1-ranked Windy City All-Stars going up against the Tampa Derby Darlins.

But if that isn’t enough of a treat, the Flatliners will also be scrimmaging against the Windy City All-Stars on Sunday, October 23rd! As a league, BHRG welcomes such opportunities because we are constantly striving to better ourselves, both physically and strategically, facing up against a nationally-ranked team such as WCR. (Not to mention the fact that a number of our Bleeding Heartlanders are friends with the WCR ladies personally.) So while we’ve got our competitive attitudes while bouting, there’s nothing but love and respect for our fellow skaters off the track!!

BHRG is excited for our upcoming Chicago trip, and we hope you are, too! If you’re in the area, we hope to see you there – otherwise, cheer loud enough so that we can hear you all the way from Bloomington!

The night began with the DCRD Destruction Dames effort to destroy the BHRG Code Blue Assassins. Then, in the Main Event, the DCRD Dynamite Dolls looked to bulldoze the BHRG Flatliners.

CODE BLUE ASSASSINS vs. DESTRUCTION DAMES

The Code Blue Assassins burst out of the gate, scoring 78 points in the first 9 jams of the first half before the Dames could even score a point. This was due, in large part, to the Code Blue Assassins pack defense. In almost every jam, the CBA jammer had made it through the pack and was already working on scoring passes before the Demo City jammer had even made an initial pass. In fact, the entire first half boasted four jams wherein the Demo City jammer never actually made it through the CBA pack on her initial pass. One of these was even a power jam in favor of the Dames. The CBA defense didn’t stop there. CBA blockers were hitting hard and targeting Demo City’s jammers. Several hard hits were doled out by CBA blockers Thigh Candy, Jalapeno Grill, Tijuana Momma and Uh Huh Hurricane. BHRG’s jammers took advantage of this hardcore defense by throwing down some equally hardcore jamming. Felanie Charges skated a 25-point jam and Bobbi McGuillotine had a 20-point jam in the first half of the game. HALF-TIME SCORE: 133-12 BHRG

In the second half, the Dames didn’t allow the CBAs to run up the score the way they had in the first half. In the 6th jam, Dames jammer Abbs of Steel scored 7 points. Over the next few jams, the Dames began to steadily add some points to the board. This small rally on the Dames part wasn’t enough to balance the score, though. In the 18th jam, CBA jammer Kung Furious skated an 18-point jam when Dames jammer Full Throttle was sent to the penalty box for a major track cut. The home crowd was treated to a special final jam with jammer Tijuana Momma. The place was going nuts as TJ closed out the game by scoring 7 more points for the Code Blue Assassins, resulting in an explosive Code Blue Assassins win. FINAL SCORE: 216-48 FWDG

High scoring jammer for Code Blue Assassins was Felanie Charges with 95 total points scored.

Congratulations Code Blue Assassins on an incredible season! You beat all the odds by coming off a rough, zero win 2010 season. You worked hard and showed Bloomington what you’re made of in a winning 2011 season with only two losses! INCREDIBLE!

FLATLINERS vs. DYNAMITE DOLLS

The Flatliners kicked things off with three spectacular jams totaling 11 points. The Dolls jammers learned right away that the Bleeding Heartland Wall of Defense (Shock ‘n Roll, Zero Dark, Bobbi McGuillotine, Assassinatrix) was a force to be reckoned with. The Dolls were able to re-group and take advantage of the BHRG jammers’ major penalties, bringing the score to 34-30 BHRG, the closest it would be for the entire game. And, while the Dolls blockers were able to lay some pretty hard hits on the Flatliners jammers and they were able to steadily gather points, there was no chance that the Flatliners defense was going to allow the Dolls to run up the score. HALF-TIME SCORE: 64-36 BHRG

The second half began with penalty box trips for all. Blockers from each team seemed to fill the box in the beginning of the half, with each team welcoming their jammer to the party for a minute as well. This resulted in very little scoring in the early part of the half. In the 11th jam, Kaka Caliente capitalized on a major penalty called on Dolls jammer B. Dawn Kadonk and scored 15 points. This was followed by an 8-point power jam from Flatliners jammer Nuck L. Sammie. Kaka Caliente took a hard hit in the 14th jam, which almost required medic attention, but she was able to skate off the track and, a tried and true athlete through and through, she was jamming again two jams later and scored 9 points for the Flatliners. This was followed by a 14-point jam from Nuck L. Sammie, a 7-point jam from Terror D’Bits and one last 5-point jam by Kaka Caliente. FINAL SCORE: 141-75 BHRG

High scoring jammer for the Flatliners was Kaka Caliente with 52 total points. But Nuck L. Sammie was hot on her tail with a total of 49 points.

Like the Code Blue Assassins, the Flatliners also saw a major turn-around this season. Last year, they had a 2-6 record in WFTDA-sanctioned game play, but this year they boast a 9-2 record. Congratulations on a season well played, Flatliners! AMAZING! ~Broken HypeWriter

Wayne Derby Girls, descended upon Bloomington, looking to exact some Spring Roll revenge. In an exciting double-header, the Fort Wayne B-Team, S.W.A.T., took on the Code Blue Assassins, followed by the much-awaited re-match between the Flatliners and The Bomb Squad, Ft. Wayne’s A-Team.

CODE BLUE ASSASSINS vs. S.W.A.T.

The first half of the game began in Ft. Wayne’s favor, when in the 4th jam, CBA jammer Felanie Charges broke through the pack first, but lost lead jammer due to a minor track cut. Felanie was then sent to the penalty box for a major track cut, which allowed Bobbie McBleed to score 20 points for Ft. Wayne in a power jam. A few jams later, the CBAs seized their own power jam opportunity when Hangin’ Judge was sent to the penalty box and Bobbi McGuillotine quickly racked up 15 points for BHRG, bringing the score to within 5 points. A smooth 4 points from CBA Felanie charges in the next jam brought the score to 36-35 S.W.A.T. with about 15 minutes remaining in the half. Both teams worked the defense well. The CBA defensive line, which consisted of Thigh Candy, Spools of Dread and Megabyte, was dubbed “the triangle of death at the front of the pack” by announcer Dick Smack. Jammers from both teams were able to eke out a few points here and there for the rest of the half. Despite a rough start and point deficits of 20 points several times in the half, the CBAs were able to keep the game tight. HALF-TIME SCORE: 51-49 BHRG

In the second half, the CBAs were effectively holding on to the lead by refusing S.W.A.T. jammers points and slowly adding points to the board for BHRG, when, in an unfortunate turn of events, Bobbi McGuillotine was sent to the box in the 9th jam, giving up 15 points to Hangin’ Judge, which resulted in a lead change in Ft. Wayne’s favor. In the very next jam, Felanie Charges was sent to the box and Ft. Wayne got another power jam, wherein The Adkins Riot tore around the track and put up 13 more points. Felanie Charges and Bobbi McGuillotine immediately came back, each with a 10-point jam, bringing the score to a tie of 85-85 with 10:30 left in the game. CBAs pulled ahead, then S.W.A.T. tied it up again with a score of 94-94 and only 6 minutes of play remaining. S.W.A.T then claimed lead jammer status for the next two jams and scored 24 more points, leaving one last jam to skate. In the final jam, The Adkins Riot captured lead jammer status after the Ft. Wayne pack unleashed some nasty hits on Bobbi McGuillotine. Riot cleverly ran down the clock until the game was called in a narrow loss for the Code Blue Assassins. FINAL SCORE: 118-94 FWDG

High scoring jammer for S.W.A.T was Hangin’ Judge with a total of 46 points.
High scoring jammer for Code Blue Assassins was Bobbi McGuillotine with 54 total points scored.
FLATLINERS vs. BOMB SQUAD

Next in the lineup, the Flatliners took on the Bomb Squad. In a huge Spring Roll upset just two weeks earlier, the Flatliners came back from a 41-point deficit with 9 minutes left in the game and clinched a narrow 5-point win over the Bomb Squad in their own arena.

The first half of the game was an absolute nail biter and included three tie scores and two lead changes. The first tie of the game occurred in the 2nd jam, with both teams at 5 points. The pack was rough on both sides, giving the jammers a hard time and resulting in a very low scoring first half. Still, the Flatliners were able to pull ahead and lead by 18 points for most of the half. This was largely thanks to the strategic game play in the Flatliners pack, as there were many jams where the pivot ran the clock down before crossing the line to release the jammers. And the spectacular defensive skill of Shock ‘n Roll and Zero Dark can’t go unmentioned. A couple major penalties called on Kaka Caliente gave the Bomb Squad some power jam opportunities. But, due to the Flatliners incredible blocking, the Bomb Squad was not allowed to run the scoreboard up. Still, the Bomb Squad was able to bring the score to a tie of 27-27 with 8 minutes left in the half. Bomb Squad took the lead in the next jam and held the Flatliners jammers back for the next three jams. But then, due to defensive duo Thigh Candy and Shock ‘n Roll, Terror D’Bits clinched lead jammer and scored eight points, giving the Flatliners the lead again. Both jammers scored points at the end of the half, though, ending the first half in an exciting tie game! HALF-TIME SCORE: 37-37

The Flatliners blazed back onto the track for the second half with a turbo charged defense, which gave Flatliner jammers a chance to immediately tack 16 point on the board in the first 4 jams. The Bomb Squad answered with a 10-point jam, bringing the score to 53-47 with 22 minutes remaining. Both squads’ incredible blocking was clearly displayed in the 7th jam, where there was no lead jammer called (due to minor penalties in the first pass for both jammers) and a full two minutes elapsed with no points scored for either team. The scenario repeated itself in the 14th jam, where an entire two minutes passed with zero points for each team. This game was perhaps one of the tightest matches in defense that the Flatliners have played this season and was, by far, the most impressive defensive play by the Flatliners thus far. While the Bomb Squad fought tooth and nail for every additional point, it just wasn’t enough to turn the tides. The Flatliners skated away with the W once again. FINAL SCORE: 79-64 BHRG

High scoring jammer for the Bomb Squad was R.I.P. Tide with 34 total points.
High scoring jammer for the Flatliners was Terror D’Bits with 37 total points.

Both BHRG teams (Code Blue Assassins and Flatliners) have been sharpening their skills and strategies and have been itching to reveal them to their ever-loyal Bloomington fan base.

In the first bout (Code Blue Assassins vs. Burning River Hazmat), both teams were scoreless until the 3rd jam, when Hazmat’s jammer, Marion Razorwound, scored 15 points after Nuck L. Sammie was sent to the penalty box. This didn’t phase the CBA’s, though. A couple jams later, Kung Furious picked up a 13-pt jam, closing the gap in scoring. By the 7th jam, the score was tied at 21-21. The CBAs steadily continued to score, while CBA defense held Burning River’s point totals down. Hazmat jammer, Buddhalicious, had a respectable 8-point jam, but it wasn’t enough to catch up with the CBAs. Halftime score was 48-38 BHRG. The Code Blue Assassins came back from the half refreshed and on fire! Their spectacular defense was evidenced by the fact that they held Hazmat scoreless for 11 jams, while the CBA jammers steadily gained points. In the meantime, the CBAs seemed to be knocking down Hazmat jammers left and right with hard hits from CBAs Bobbi McGuillotine, Dr. Elliot Bleed and Assassinatrix. By the time Hazmat actually scored any points, the CBAs had spread the lead to 79-40. The tables appeared to be turning over the next few jams as Hazmat’s defense had a small rally in scoring and defense. However, a 10-pt jam from rookie Nuck L. Sammie sealed the deal in the second to last jam of the game.
FINAL SCORE: 93-55 CBAs

The #16 Bleeding Heartland Flatliners then took on the #14 Burning River All-Stars in a highly anticipated match-up. The crowd was witness to a low-scoring first half. Burning River star jammer, CoCo Sparx, had a 10-pt jam early on, which gave the All-Stars a lead and an edge for much of the first half. The fans were treated to non-stop track action while the All-Stars held the lead, but the Flatliners held it together, didn’t lose focus and fought to catch up. In a concerted effort between jammers like Kaka Caliente and Terror D’Bits steadily scoring and excellent defense from the Flatliner pack, BHRG was able to bring the score to 37-34 BHRG at the half. The Flatliners returned in the second half with a fury. The Flatliners consistently kept the pack at lightning pace, tiring out the opponents jammers. Despite staying pretty evenly matched in points with Burning River for the first 8 jams, the All-Stars faced a force to reckoned with in Flatliners blocker Shock ‘n Roll. At one point, Shock ‘n Roll literally jumped over the pack to get to the All-Stars jammer and knock her out of bounds! The penalty box was a popular spot for both teams throughout the second half. At times, there was literally chaos in the pack, making for an exciting ride for the home crowd. Fabulous jamming by Nuck L. Sammie, combined with some exquisite blocking by Dr. Elliot Bleed, Killer Kindness and Zero Dark culminated in a jubilant win for the Flatliners.
FINAL SCORE: 81-59 FLATLINERS

High scoring jammers for the Code Blue Assassins were Felanie Charges with 35 total points scored and Nuck L. Sammie, who scored 27 total points.

High scoring jammer for the Flatliners was Nuck L. Sammie with 33 total points. Close behind her, though, were the Flatliners other jammers, Kaka Caliente (27 points) and Terror D’Bits (21 points).

On Saturday, February 26, your Bleeding Heartland Flatliners kicked off their 5th season by hitting the road and heading to Louisville, KY to battle the Derby City Roller Girls. The venue was packed with enthusiastic DCRG fans, and BHRG had their own healthy contingent of die-hard fans sitting trackside as well. Play started slow in the first jam, but the Flatliners defense sprung into action in the second jam, knocking DCRG jammer, Shellnita Crutch, out of bounds more than once. DCRG was not without their own stellar defense, though, and were able to hold BHRG to 11 points, quickly answering with their own 10-pt run a few jams later. BHRG had some trouble with penalties in the middle of the first half, allowing DCRG to steadily score. Enter BHRG rookie jammer, Nuck L. Sammie: a bundle of energy that lit up the track. Fighting tooth and nail, she was handed a power jam and, with help from blocker Dr. Elliot Bleed, Sammie was able to put 14 points up for BHRG, securing a lead that would only grow larger throughout the first half. With just a few minutes left in the first half, DCRG’s jammer was in the box and BHRG jammer Kaka Caliente breezed through an almost stand-still pack twice and scored a whopping 24 points in one jam! The Flatliners defense debuted some new strategy and plays, which clearly paid off in the points department. Half time score was 95-41.

The second half was fast-paced and thrilling, as DCRG was able to capture Lead Jammer and steadily gain points. By the 7th jam, DCRG had added 22 points to their total score, compared to BHRG’s zero. However, what looked like a possible rally on DCRG’s part was quickly squelched by the Flatliners, who outscored them over the next 6 jams. These points, combined with great defensive play by BHRG’s blockers, clinched the game for the Flatliners. All in all, both teams showed some excellent skills; in the end, the Flatliners took home the win, starting out the season right!

DCRG jammer and Captain, Trick Pony, was the high scorer for her team with 50 total points. Bleeding Heartland high scoring jammers were Kaka Caliente with 65 total points, followed closely by Terror D’Bits with 63 total points. FINAL SCORE: 157-103 BHRG – Leah Drichel

Been missing your Bleeding Heartland Roller Girls during the off season? On Saturday, February 5th BHRG opened their 5th season with a bang by hosting the B-Cup Challenge at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center. This event consisted of eight games of roller derby between 8 B and C teams from 6 leagues spanning across Illinois and Indiana. It was a full day of roller derby excitement that definitely didn’t disappoint!

The first bout of the day introduced the Bleeding Heartland Roller Girls’ brand new C-Team, the Heart Attacks, who took on the Soy City Rollers from Decatur, IL. FINAL SCORE: 204-28 BHRG

Next up was a great match-up between the Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls and Circle City Party Crashers from Indianapolis. FINAL SCORE: 99-58 CC

No time for rest! This is derby, folks! The third bout of the day took place with a battle between the Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls second team, The War Dolls, and the South Bend Roller Girls. Although things were close at the half (58-27 SB), SBRG took off in the second half, resulting in a FINAL SCORE of 151-46 SBRG.

On the heels of South Bend, Bleeding Heartland’s Code Blue Assassins went up against the Twin City Derby Girls from Champaign/Urbana, IL and soundly defeated them with a FINAL SCORE of 124-54 BHRG.

In the 5th bout of the day, Soy City showed great improvement as they took on Lafayette’s War Dolls, but weren’t quite able to pull out a victory. FINAL SCORE: 105-44 LBD

Twin City reversed the tables on Lafayette in the 6th bout when they played Lafayette’s Team 1, beating them with a FINAL SCORE of 91-50 TCDG.

A full day of hits and hip checks culminated in the Main Event, two BHRG bouts to bring the long day of derby to a close.

BOUT 7 – BHRG Heart Attacks vs. South Bend Roller Girls
The Heart Attacks came out ready to attack in their final bout of the day against South Bend Roller Girls. The pack started out fast and tight and the Heart Attacks consistently out-scored SBRG throughout the first half, even though they only captured Lead Jammer status in only 8 of 17 jams. BHRG blocking was in fine form, especially in the 8th jam when BHRG had a jammer and two blockers in the penalty box and Dr. Eliot Bleed and Jalapeno Grill were able to skillfully hold back South Bend’s jammer, Sinister Strike, so that she was only able to score 5 points in the jam. In the following jam, Dr. Eliot Bleed and Vengeance Anya were able to keep the pack fast and spread while they waited for their blockers to come out of the box. Jammer, Bobbie McGuillotine, showed some moxy as she was just about through the pack to capture Lead Jammer in the middle of the 1st half and she was completely wiped out by Eireann Go Brawl and still managed to fight back and gain Lead Jammer status! Near the end of the half, Knitty Gritty took a hard shoulder from SBRG and was knocked out of bounds in the first pass, only to come back and score a grand slam before the South Bend jammer even broke through the pack. Her total points in that jam totaled 15 points, South Bend 0. Score at the half was 71-21 BHRG.

South Bend ramped up their defense in the second half, resulting in much lower scoring for the Heart Attacks. Scoring was also low for South Bend, though, so both teams were concentrating on defense.
Bleeding Heartland high scoring jammers were Knitty Gritty with 46 total points and Bobbie McGuillotine and Jalapeno Grill with 26 total points each. FINAL SCORE: 102-40 BHRG

BOUT 8 – BHRG Code Blue Assassins vs. Circle City Party Crashers
In the final bout of a full day of derby, the Code Blue Assassins took on the Circle City Derby Girls’ Party Crashers. The CBAs defense came out to play, holding the Party Crashers scorless in the first 3 jams. In the fourth jam, CBA jammer Nuck L. Sammie was sent to the box, leaving the Party Crashers with a power jam. They were able to score a big 20 points, giving them the lead. The CBAs managed to regain the lead 2 jams later with a 12 point jam by Nuck L. Sammie.

The CBA’s held the Party Crashes scoreless for several more jams, increasing their lead. In the 12th jam of the first half, Party Crasher Killer Purple was denied lead jammer due to a minor elbow penalty. The Nuck L. Sammie captured lead, putting up 18 points for the CBAs. The first half ended with BHRG leading 86-35.
The Party Crashers came back from the half with a vengeance, putting up 18 points in the first jam under the skates of jammer Liberty Spykes. The CBAs answered 2 jams later with 10 points of their own. The next jam saw another 15 points from Liberty Spykes, ensuring that the second half would be just as exciting as the first.

The CBAs maintained a 30 point lead for the next several jams. The intensity was high, with several penalties from both teams, and big hits from both teams. In the 10th jam, Nuck L. Sammie came up big for the CBAs again, scoring 21 unanswered points. The rest of the game was low scoring, as both teams played excellent defense. FINAL SCORE: 158-87 BHRG

After the last whistle of the last game of a very long day of derby, all teams went out to celebrate the day at the Pants off Dance off, where MVPs for each game were crowned, and the day’s winning team was announced. With the largest point spread for the day, the B-Cup stayed in Bloomington, thanks to the Heart Attacks! Great job ladies!
