Yes, girls and boys, it’s that magical time of year again – BHRG is having a SKILLS CAMP!! We want to expand our derby family, skaters and refs alike, so if you’re reading this post that means we want YOU!

Many of our skaters have been recruited through our previous skills camps and that means it can start your derby career, too! But first, we want to get a couple of common roller derby skills camp myths out of the way:

Skills Camp Myth Public Enemy #1:

“I can’t skate / haven’t skated in years, therefore I shouldn’t tryout because I need to know how to skate.”

The Reality:

Wrong. Nada. Bass-ackwards. All you really need is the following: to know how to fall. (Take a moment and practice if you need to.) Got it? Excellent.

Skills Camp Myth #2:

“I’ve never played sports / been much of an athlete. I’m not in the right kind of shape to do derby.”

The Reality:

<See response to first myth> One thing we can’t stress enough – EVERY size and shape is valuable on that derby track and you learn to play to your own strengths and abilities! That’s just one element of what makes roller derby amazing. Never been an athlete? Never to late to start. And we’ll help you.

What we bring:

Extra derby pads and helmets for you to use. Basic skating / proper falling lessons. Loads of encouragement.

What you bring:

Comfy clothes. A dollar for skate rental. A little bravery.

You’ve got nothing to lose (except a buck) and an incredible amount to gain! We hope to see you there so save the date and take a chance:

Monday, September 19th

On Saturday, August 28th, the Bleeding Heartland Roller Girls played a double header against the Ohio Roller Girls at Twin Lakes Recreation Center in Bloomington. This was the last home bout of the season for the Bleeding Heartland Roller Girls and, in addition, the last home bout skated by Flatliners Boogie Tights, Margles McNasty and Unicoroner. The teams appeared to be closely matched in wins/losses, so the crowd was in for a treat. See below for a recap of each bout.

Code Blue Assassins (CBA) vs. Gang Green (GG)

The bout promised excitement from the very first jam as CBA jammer, Sadie Macdeath, careened into the crowd out of Turn 3 while referee, Brad Religion, also took a nasty spill. Gang Green started off strong by scoring 14 points in the first jam. The thrills continued into the second jam when it appeared that skaters were spinning all over the place and the pack was racing around the track at full speed. Code Blue Assassins took lead jammer in Jam 3, mostly due to CBA blockers Snide Piper and Uh Huh Hurricane holding back the GG jammer so CBA jammer, Knitty Gritty, could slide through the pack. Skillful blocking was also seen from Thigh Candy and Tijuana Momma.  In the seventh jam of the first half, the Code Blue Assassins brought the score to 20-26, despite the fact that part of the jam was skated with only two CBA blockers, who held back the entire Gang Green pack. The eighth jam, however, demonstrated perfect team blocking by Gang Green and CBA’s jammer, Uh Huh Hurricane, in addition to getting thrown around quite a bit, just couldn’t quite get past the wall of white. Code Blue Assassins answered with their own impenetrable wall in the second to last jam of the first half, though, when CBA jammer, Sadie Macdeath, skated a14-point jam! The score at half time was Code Blue Assassins 38, Gang Green 56.Â

The second half started out rough for the Code Blue Assassins, as Gang Green captured lead jammer status in 7 of the first 10 jams. In addition, penalties began to take their toll on the Code Blue Assassins.  Dr. Elliot Bleed from the CBAs was ejected from the game in the second half for taking 7 trips to the box. Despite the trouble with penalties, CBA blocker Thigh Candy was a force to be reckoned with and was quite a challenge for Gang Green jammers to pass. In the 16th jam of the second half, Gang Green’s Seoul Sister landed a hard hit on CBA jammer, Shifty McGee, and there was a massive pileup of skaters in Turn 4. Tijuana Momma used the very last jam to try out a new blocking tactic…screaming in the opposing blocker’s faces. Perhaps it worked, because Code Blue Assassins jammer, Knitty Gritty, scored 20 points in that jam after Gang Green’s jammer, Nukleophile, was sent to the penalty box for a major track cut and didn’t make her initial pass.

Point-scoring standouts of the game for the Code Blue Assassins were Knitty Gritty, who scored 39 points, and Sadie Macdeath, with a total of 20 points scored. For Gang Green, the points leaders of the game were Wendra Woman with a whopping 53 points, Nukleophile with 26 and Paige Bleed with 24. Final score: Code Blue Assassins 80, Gang Green 117. –Leah Drichel

Flatliners (FL) vs. All-Stars (AS)

The Flatliners sprung out of the gate with a fierceness that could’ve been fueled by the knowledge that several beloved team members were skating their last Bleeding Heartland home bout. The Flatliners kept it neat and clean for the first four jams – getting in, scoring and getting out. This gave them a quick 14-point lead. The All-Stars scored a point in the fourth jam, but the Flatliners led for most of the first half. Both teams demonstrated excellent defensive play. For the Flatliners, this tight defense could easily be seen in the 9th jam of the first half wherein Scarlet Witch and Bombshell Shock skated a full two-minute jam and were able to keep the All-Stars jammer, Z, back; she eventually broke through, but was not eligible for lead jammer status. The pack seemed to be flying through much of the first half. There were several timeouts called by the officials for discussions on scoring. Flatliners led the game until jam 16, when All-Stars jammer, Kitty Liquorbottom, scored 10 points and Flatliners jammer, Kaka Caliente, was not able to make her initial pass. The score after jam 16 was FL29, AS31. The next jam brought some amazing blocking by Killer Kindness and Zero Dark, as the two ladies held back AS jammer, Phoenix Bunz, while Terror D’Bits recovered from a fall and caught back up to the pack, slipping through to capture Lead Jammer status. The Flatliners caught back up in the following jam, when Margles McNasty gave a vital assist and literally shoved the Flatliners jammer, Terror D’Bits, through the pack to capture lead jammer. Flatliners scored 3 points bringing the score to FL36, AS34. The score at halftime was Flatliners 43, All-Stars 34.

The second half started out nicely for the Flatliners, as they did not allow the All-Stars to score at all until the 5th jam, when FL jammer, Kaka Caliente, was sent to the penalty box for back blocking. This, along with the fact that Flatliners Bombshell Shock and Killer Kindness were also serving time in the penalty box, opened the floor for All-Stars jammer, Kitty Liquorbottom to score a devastating 16 points, bringing the score to FL47, AS54. In the next jam, there was mass confusion when a no-pack situation appeared to confuse the officials, who gave lead jammer status to FL Shock n’ Roll. Upon review of the jam, it was determined that HellionBOI should have been lead jammer and, because Shock ‘n Roll had called off the jam (when she was not technically lead jammer), she would be required to serve time in the penalty box. This elicited a strong reaction from the crowd, but play continued. Because Shock’n started off the next jam in the box, the All-Stars were handed a power jam situation and they took advantage of it by scoring 14 points and bringing the score to FL48, AS68 with 18 minutes remaining in the second half. Momentum suffered after this and several penalties slowed the Flatliners down in scoring. Sadly, Margles McNasty was ejected from the game in the 10th jam of the second half, for making 7 trips to the box. The Flatliners pushed hard to the end and in the second-to-last jam, Terror D’Bits scored an unanswered grand slam against All-Stars’ Wendra Woman. Overall points leaders for the Flatliners were Terror D’Bits with 33 points and Kaka Caliente, who scored 26. All-Stars jammer, Kitty Liquorbottom, can boast about her hard-earned 43 points and HellionBOI scored 26. Final score: Flatliners 67, All-Stars 97. –Leah Drichel

Well, here’s an answer: bring any item from the Girls Incorporated of Monroe County’s wish list to our June 12th bout! Your donation will earn you BHRG Bucks, good at our merchandise table, and the appreciation of girls and rollergirls right here at home. Wish list items include things like markers, pencils and pencil sharpeners, stickers, tape, and more! Girls Inc. is counting on your help to make their summer programs a success!

On to the bout. Hot on the wheels of their recent win, The Bleeding Heartland Roller Girls Flatliners will be taking on the fastest things to come out of Louisville, and we’re not talking ponies!  The Derby City Roller Girls (DCRG) of Louisville will be visiting Bloomington for a challenge they’re not soon to forget. This will be Derby City’s fifth interleague bout this season, and they’ve shown some solid wins. However, your Flatliners are just warming up; with only three games and our first tournament behind us, we’ve got plenty of steam and smarts to let loose on the track. And we need BHRG fans to pack the stands at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center to cheer us on!

The game will take place at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center at 1700 W. Bloomfield Rd., on Saturday, June 12. Doors open at 6:00 PM, and the bout starts at 7:00.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Kid’s tickets are $5, children under 4 get in free.  Tickets are available at all Bloomingfoods locations, Rolling Thunder Fun Factory, Sunrise Box Office, Twin Lakes Recreation Center, Vintage Phoenix Comics, and brownpapertickets.com (search BHRG). Or, just ask your favorite rollergirl to hook you up!

Girls Incorporated is a national youth organization dedicated to helping girls become strong, smart, and bold. They host a variety of programs aimed at tutoring, developing talents, and improving life skills of girls ages 6-18. To find out how you can get involved as a volunteer or donor, visit www.girlsinc-monroe.org.
