For the Monsters, Kaka Caliente totalled 26 points, with an impressive 5 of 6 jams gaining lead. Unicoroner jammed 10 times for 16 points, with contributions of 11 points from Shock ‘n’ Roll, 9 from Bombshell Shock, 7 from Boogie Tights, and 1 from Scarlet Witch.
For the Zombies, it was Rookie of the Year candidate Terror d’Bits with a game high 43 points on 4 for 10 lead jammer status, aided by 10 points from fellow rookie Kung Furious, 7 each from Vengeance Anya and Betty Wreckognize, and 6 from Party Foul.
Penalty Leaders
Overall, BHRG skaters spent less time in the box than they average. Monsters were led in penalties by Shock ‘N’Roll with 7 minors, 1 major, and Unicoroner with 2 minors, 3 majors. Zombies were led by Margles McNasty with 7 minors, 3 majors, and Charmed N. Dangerous with 7 minors and no majors.
The Zombies jumped out in front early, taking a 9-0 lead in the first 2 jams. Bombshell Shock and Kaka Caliente managed to get their squad on the board in jams 4 and 6, and the score stood at 16-12 in favor of the Zombies. A streak of 3 consecutive lead jam calls for the Zombies allowed them to outscore the Monsters 10-2 over the next three jams to briefly extend their lead to 26-14. However, the Monsters came roaring back, gaining lead jammer the next 6 jams in a row, outscoring the Zombies 21-4 over that stretch to take their first lead after the 15th jam, 35-30. Game High scorer Terror d’Bits scored the last 6 points of the first half for the Zombies to put them back on top by one at the break, 36-35.
The second half was mostly back and forth as the teams dueled to the finish. Kung Furious tried to increase the Zombies’ lead with a 5-0 jam to make it 41-35, but the very next jam Kaka Caliente answered for the monsters with a 9-0 shutout that took the lead back for the Monsters. Terror d’Bits turned in an impressive 9-0 jam to put the Zombies back on top by one, 51-50, but over the next six jams, the Monsters used lead jammer status to their advantage, achieving lead jam 4 of those 6 jams and outscoring the Zombies 18-1 over that span (including a 10 point jam from Unicoroner), and getting their biggest lead of the game by 16 points, 67-51. The Zombies again turned to Terror d’Bits, who put together three grand slams for a 15-point shutout that cut the Monsters’ lead to a single point, 67-66. With the clock winding down, Party Foul gained lead jam for the Zombies after Unicoroner was sent to the penalty box, and with a quick scoring pass, called the jam off after scoring 3 points to reclaim the lead for the Zombies, 69-67. Terror d’Bits took the jammer line alone, with Unicoroner in the penalty box. The Monsters’ blocking was enough to hold Terror back, and Unicoroner was able to emerge from the box and get into the action. Unicoroner gained lead jammer and tried to shut Terror out, calling the jam off quickly as she got into the pack. The score went 3-1 in favor of Unicoroner, knotting the game at 70 points apiece. Time out was called by the Zombies, setting up the final jam. Once again, Terror and Uni lined up at the jammer line. Both jammers had a difficult time getting through the pack, as the blockers of both teams were determined to deny their opponents. Neither jammer was able to gain lead, so the jam was going to its natural conclusion at the end of two minutes. A brutal hit took down Unicoroner, who never seemed to really recover the speed that she’s known for. When the four whistle blasts ended the jam, Terror d’Bits was awarded 3 points, sealing the victory for the Zombies, and once again providing a thrilling conclusion for the fans at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center.
So, yeah, that was the game.
